Atif Aslam - A Lover Croons!!!

If there is something called instant connect, then Atif Aslam’s singing typifies it—soulful yet quivering with fervent youthful energy.

Atif is the latest in the line of talented crop of Pakistani singers we have seen in recent times… Nazia Hassan (need one say much... :-)), Jahangir Hassan (remember Hawa Hawa!), Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Raahat Fateh Ali, Adnan Sami (of Lift Karaa De fame) and Strings' Faisal and Bilal (recall Dhaani?).

Continuing the trend was a young Atif. Alongwith his Jal band mate Goher, Atif hit the scene with Aadat. The year was 2004. A video shot in a colonial Karachi mansion became an instant craze in Pakistan topping the radio FMs in that country.

Mahesh Bhatt is attributed to giving Atif his Bollywood break. The very next year (2005) Atif crooned to chart-busting Woh Lamhe from Zeher.

Since then, his popularity shows no sign of ebbing…

Here’s a look at Atif Aslam's Bollywood songs:

Tu Jaane Na (Film: Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, 2009; Music: Pritam Chakraborty): This wonder-struck love ballad is high on mood. Youthful, soulful yet happy and so full of love, it has been an instant hit with the young ones.

Tera Honey Laga Hoon (Film: Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, 2009 Music: Pritam Chakraborty): Here’s another one from Atif-Pritam team. Giving company is immensely talented Alisha Chinnoy. Cast in the young, soft rock genre, this love sonnet is vintage Atif. It suits Ranbir Kapoor to the T.

Pehle Nazar (Film: Race, 2008; Music: Pritam Chakraborty): Throbbing with sensual energy is this number from Race. The emotional urge and urgency of this song is sure to blow listeners away; small wonder it was a smashing hit.

Tere Bin (Film: Bas Ek Pal, 2006; Music: Pritam Chakraborty): Here’s another cracker from the Atif stable. Young, passionate, longing and oh-so-sensuous! Well, almost hinting at lust!

Woh Lamhe (Film: Zeher, 2005; Music: Anu Malik & Roop Kumar Rathod): The song that got Atif on a long road to Bollywood fame and one that got Indians to be introduced to the youngster from across the border. Vibrant, alive, passionate, emotional, full throated; this was young Atif being introduced to Indians for the first time.

Atif Aslams Albums:

The album that got Atif started a long road to fame and destiny was ‘Doorie’. It has a number of record-busting numbers such as ‘Doorie’, ‘Kuch is Tarah’ and ‘Hum Kis Galli Ja Rahe Hain’. All hits and at least two that have been adapted and used as Bollywood numbers. Way to go, Atif!

Jalpari was, of course, his first solo venture and was released in 2004. The most memorable number was ‘Aadat’, again used in Bollywood film ‘Kalyug’. Atif was then only 21! Imagine!!

His songs in his albums are striking in their expression of melancholic love and longing; a note that transforms into passionate desire in his later Bollywood numbers.

Here was a guy who is at once a young rockstar with soft, romantic overtones and yet a mature lover.

Like with anybody else, skeptics abound. Many find him technically challenged (Be-sura in Hindustani) but for a man who sings from his heart, such criticism barely holds much water.

After all, who would care for correctness, when a happy heart sings? Long Live Atif Aslam’s glorious imperfections!

Good news for all Atif Aslam fans, Buzzintown presents this star singer, Atif Aslam live in concert, on 11 February 2010 at the Hamsadhwani Theatre, New Delhi India. Book your tickets now before it is too late!!!

Boards just another exam

The D-day is approaching. Tension is running high. Parents are in a tizzy and students are stressed out. This is a normal scenario that is seen across the country during this time. After all the board exams are just days away.

Such is the pressure on students taking Class X and Class XII exam that some break under its wait. A student who had taken her Class XII exam last year was going mad. She said that she just could not take in the stress. Her friends told her that they had finished revising their course twice, while she had not even completed the course. Her parents would tell her that she needed to put in extra time. It was only when she went to see a counsellor that she managed to sit for the exam and managed to get a decent percentage.

The principal of Apeejay School, Saket Anita Paul says that it is not the students who feel the pressure so much as their parents. Most students are stressed out because their parents are always telling them to study. Many parents take leave from their office for a month before the Boards. This is definitely not advisable.

Exam time is taxing on all concerned, whether it is the parents, the students or the teachers. However, care should be taken not to add to the student’s stress Paul opines. One can understand the concern parents have if a child is taking Class XII Board. It is after all a matter of his/her future. Class X exam on the other hand should be treated like any other exam. In fact, it is the parents sometimes who create the hype.

So what is it that are some of the points that students should keep in mind while preparing for the exam? Now the students should concentrate on revision. Schools finish their course well in advance. There is no hard and fast rule of how students should go about studying. But one thing is important – they must make a timetable and follow it religiously.

However, Paul is of the opinion that students should not sit for hours on end to study. She believes that a child should take a break for 10-15 minutes every hour. This not only refreshes the mind, it also helps in assimilating what he/she has studied. She of course does not advise students to watch TV during this time.

Another thing that Paul believes is important is physical exercise and the diet. Students should go for a walk in the morning. Students must eat fruits and vegetables and avoid eating junk food. But one can’t force children to eat a certain type of food. The job of parents and teachers is to tell them what is good for them.

For most students Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are words that send them into a panic mode. There is of course a sure shot way to ensure that the students come out winners. Practice makes a man perfect. These subjects should be studied everyday. The other subjects should also be studied everyday but, how a student charts out his/her timetable would depend on them.

What about those students who prefer to study at night? Studying during the day is more fruitful. After all staying awake the whole night is against how nature intended. But if it works for the student it is ok.

The most important thing that students should keep in mind is that the Boards should be treated like any other exam. Keep a cool head and don’t panic is Paul’s advise to all students.

Kill time with fun activities

Kids on vacation with time to kill can literally kill you if you don’t watch out! You may not have all the time to spend with them, even though you’d love to do so. Before your kids turn into couch potatoes and turn to the TV, junk food, the computer and video games for solace, get cracking! The secret mantra is to plan well ahead of holidays and give the kids enough to do. Here are some ideas we’d like to share...

Class act

Enroll the kids in holiday classes. If you scout around, you are sure to find plenty of them in the neighborhood itself. Cookery or swimming classes for kids are a great idea. Or get them to learn a language, let them join a karate, craft, jewellery making, drawing, sewing, knitting or painting class.

These days there are aerobic classes for kids, keeping them both, fit and busy! Bollywood dancing is something they will love, so locate the nearest dance school and rope in a group of their friends to join in as well.

Hands-on activities

Kids love the importance of being in charge. Give them a patch in the garden to tend, ask them to make toast at breakfast time or plan a barbeque together. Get them to help clean a room, tidy a cupboard or arrange kitchen shelves.

Kids are great with pets, so put them in charge of brushing or walking the dog, feeding the fish or birds.

Teach them how to make greeting cards out of old invitation cards, and let them use their imagination to create cards. Forget about what you are going to do with them, just let them make the cards.

Group therapy

Kids love working in groups. Find out about weekend camps for the holiday season. Get a group of kids and plan a picnic, a visit to the park or the zoo. Get a group of kids together at home and have a story telling session.

Take a group of kids to the florist, and introduce them to the different flowers. Plan an afternoon movie, or take them for a concert or theatre performance in the city. Other parents can volunteer to take charge and you can even get a day free.

Remember, kids have a short attention span, so small chores one at a time is what works best! Don’t inflict things they abhor, instead choose things that will interest them.

Get them to do something new before they start getting bored. It’s important that you give them clear assignments and fix a time or day for each. Holidays are time for fun, so make sure you add that dash of fun to their holidays without the kids getting into your hair!

Reliving a Golden ERA...

“Puranne ganon mein jo baat hai woh naye ganon mein kahan” this is a very common statement that we all must have heard from our grand-parents and parents innumerable times. I do not know about you people but I also second this statement. It looks like that was a Golden ERA of Indian Music Industry with singers like Shamshad Begum, Mahendera Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Uma Devi (popularly known as Tun-2 ), Asha Bhosle, etc governing the industry. All were stalwarts in various genres.

A Few Notable Films of 1940 - 1960

The movies released during 1940 - 1960 had music which appeals till date too. If 1940s witnessed Zeenat, Gaon ki Gori, Badi, Maa, Do Bhaii, Dard, Shehnai, etc then 1950s had Aan, Baiju Banwara, Jaal, Maa, Anhonee, Sanskar, Nagina, etc. not to miss Barssat ki Raat, Mughal-E-Azam, Jis Desh mein Ganga Rehta Hai, Bombai ka Babu, Ghunghat, Anuradha, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai of 1960s.

The songs of movies like Chaudhvin Ka Chand released in 1960, starring Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, & Rehman, based on a love triangle, will touch you even today. This movie was highly commercially successful & made profits of then what 100 movies were to have made. The famous song “Chaudhvin Ka Chand ho yaah aftaab ho” is still very popular even after almost five decades. And then not to forget music of K. Asif’s, “Mughal-E-Azam” there won’t be even a single Bollywood fan who has not heard “Jab pyar kiya to..” song.

Few Famous songs of...

If Mohammed Rafi sang songs like ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand ho yaah aftaab ho’, ‘Deewanna mastana hua dil jaane’ (Bombai ka Babu), ‘Tum jo mil gaye ho’ (Haste Zakham), ‘Naa kissi ki ankh ka noor hunn’, ‘Mat ho meri jaan udas’, ‘Teri Aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai', 'Aap ke haseen rukh pe aaj naya noor hai', 'Deewana hua Badal' (generally his songs used to be for Shammi Kapoor movies). Then Mukesh's songs like ‘Jab door kahin din dhal jaye’ (Anand), ‘Maine Tere Liye Hi Saat Rang Ke saapne’, ‘Chandan sa badan’, etc. Won’t even dare to miss melodious songs by Manna Dey ‘Laaga Chunari me daag’, ‘Aye meri zohra jabeen’ (Waqt), ‘Kasmien wadey pyar wafa sab bateinn hain’, ‘Ye raat bhigi bhigi’. Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Woh bhulli daastaan’ (Pareenita), ‘lag jaa galle’, .the list is endless.

Relive that era in one such music concert in Bangalore called Rang De Basanti from 23rd Jan 2010 – 26th Jan 2010. Pankaj Kothari of Sagar Caterers has been organizing it since 2006. The specialty of Rang De Basanti is its unique feature of “Khana with Gaana”. You get a chance of savoring 150+ delicacies from 6 PM till 8:30 PM then picks up the musical night.
